    This two-day training hosted by the Providers Clinical Support System – Medications for Alcohol Use Disorder (PCSS-MAUD) will provide a comprehensive overview of alcohol use disorder (AUD), AUD treatment and recovery options, including medications for alcohol use disorder and cultural considerations for treating different populations.     Overview

    This two-day training hosted by the Providers Clinical Support System – Medications for Alcohol Use Disorder (PCSS-MAUD) will provide a comprehensive overview of alcohol use disorder (AUD), AUD treatment and recovery options, including medications for alcohol use disorder and cultural considerations for treating different populations. The training will build skills to identify and diagnose AUD, determine a medication to treat AUD based on patients’ unique needs and goals, and assess the risk for alcohol withdrawal syndrome. Through didactic presentations, case discussions, knowledge checks, and small group discussions, training participants will have the opportunity to apply learned skills and engage with their peers and the presenters.  

    Training topics include medications for alcohol use disorder; ambulatory management of AUD and alcohol withdrawal syndrome; treating AUD in different healthcare settings including primary care/FQHCs, hospitals, emergency departments; treating AUD in special populations including pregnant/post-partum individuals, Indigenous and American Indians, adolescents and youth, and older adults. 

    Training will take place at the Hilton Garden Inn in Bozeman, MT. The training will start at 1 PM MT on Wednesday, November 6, and 9 AM on Thursday, November 7.  

    This activity is eligible for 8 CE credits. The target audience for this Introductory level session includes pharmacists, physicians, counselors, social workers, physician assistants/associates, nurse practitioners, and nurses.  

    In support of improving patient care, ASAM is jointly accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME), the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE), and the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), to provide continuing education for the healthcare team. 

    Learning Objectives

    Upon completion, learners will be able to:

    1. Describe the three FDA-approved medications for alcohol use disorder and how best to determine a medication regimen. 
    2. Identify at least two strategies for addressing barriers to integrating alcohol use disorder services into primary care settings. 
    3. Demonstrate how to assess risk for alcohol withdrawal syndrome and determine a treatment plan based on risk.

    This 1.5-hour, case-based, interactive online module covers the neurobiology of Alcohol Withdrawal Syndrome (AWS), outpatient and hospital management of AWS, and patient-centered goal setting.

    Gain an in-depth understanding of the assessment, management, and treatment processes for AWS through this comprehensive online module. Designed for both outpatient and hospital-based settings, this case-based, interactive module equips learners with essential knowledge and practical skills for triaging and managing patients experiencing alcohol withdrawal. Discover how to transition patients to evidence-based pharmacotherapy and incorporate adjunct behavioral therapies. Emphasizing individualized care plans, the module provides strategies for effective patient support throughout the withdrawal process.

    The target audience for this introductory level activity includes clinical healthcare professionals who prescribe medications in outpatient or inpatient settings.

    Melissa Weimer, DO, MCR, FASAM is board-certified in Internal Medicine and Addiction Medicine. She is an Associate Professor of Medicine and Public Health and Associate Program Director of the Addiction Medicine Fellowship at Yale University. She is an expert in hospital-based care for patients with substance use disorders and has worked with colleagues to develop successful hospital-based Addiction Medicine Consult Services at both Oregon Health & Science University and Yale University/Yale New Haven Hospital. Dr. Weimer is also a national leader in Addiction Medicine education and has developed curricula for substance use disorder evaluation and treatment and safe and effective pain treatment. Dr. Weimer serves on the national board of ASAM and is the Chair of the ASAM Clinical Practice Guidelines Methodology and Oversight Committee.

    Andrea is a clinical nurse educator for Boston Medical Center's Grayken Center for Addiction Training and Technical Assistance, where she contributes to the development and delivery of continuing education programs, peer-reviewed publications, evidence-based clinical guidelines, and other resources for providers supporting patients with substance use disorders. She is also a family nurse practitioner at Boston Medical Center, an assistant professor of medicine at the Boston University Chobanian & Avedisian School of Medicine, and conducts research in the use of telehealth and coordinated care for persons with opioid use disorder and depression. Andrea is an active member of the Boston University Medical Group Advanced Practice Provider Council and the Massachusetts Coalition of Nurse Practitioners. Andrea has worked with vulnerable populations for over 10 years including managing substance use disorders and overall healthcare for persons experiencing homelessness with the Boston Health Care for the Homeless Program. She is a term lecturer and preceptor for nurse practitioner students at the Massachusetts General Hospital Institute of Health Professions (IHP) and received her Doctor in Nursing Practice (DNP) degree from the IHP in 2018. She also holds certification as a Certified Addiction Registered Nurse - Advanced Practice (CARN-AP) through the Addictions Nursing Certification Board (ANCB).
