Overview
This 1.5-hour, interactive online module covers evidence-based treatments, screening tools, and implementation considerations for treating alcohol use disorder in primary care.
Become equipped with the knowledge and skills needed to effectively incorporate medications for alcohol use disorder (MAUD) and related services into your practice. Healthcare professionals in primary care settings will learn about evidence-based treatments, screening tools, and implementation strategies, all aimed at improving care for patients with alcohol use disorder. This module offers practical guidance in addressing this common but often undertreated condition, ultimately enhancing patient outcomes and reducing alcohol-related harm in your community.
The target audience for this introductory level activity includes clinical healthcare professionals who prescribe medications in outpatient or inpatient settings.
This activity addresses the following ACGME Competencies: Patient Care and Procedural Skills; Medical Knowledge; Professionalism; and Systems-Based Practice
Learning Objectives
Upon completion, learners will be able to:
- Explain the benefits of integrating AUD treatment in primary care settings.
- Identify common barriers and challenges to addressing AUD in primary care and strategies to overcome them.
- Identify tools and resources that support integrating MAUD into primary care workflows.
- Explain the importance of collaboration and effective communication in integrating MAUD into primary care.
- Develop personalized AUD treatment plans incorporating MAUD, behavioral therapies, and specialty care referrals.
- Apply patient-centered communication to educate patients about MAUD, address concerns, and encourage treatment adherence.

Angela Colistra
PhD, LPC, CAADC, CCS
Angela Colistra, PhD has been working with individuals managing co-occurring disorders, lending her expertise to therapy, medical training, clinical supervision, education, and research. She is the director of Behavioral Sciences and Associate Medical Director of Community and Practice-Based research for the Department of Family Medicine. She is a faculty member of the American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM). A member of the Pennsylvania Advisory Council for Substance Use, offering guidance to the Governor of Pennsylvania and the Secretary of Drug and Alcohol Programs. Angie owns Aligned Consulting and Coaching LLC, providing addiction and behavioral health consulting and coaching.

Christine Harsell
DNP, ANP-BC
Christine Harsell, DNP, ANP-BC is a nurse practitioner and clinical associate professor at UND College of Nursing and Professional Disciplines. She is a previous project director of an Interprofessional SBIRT training grant at UND. She currently works with the MPATTC team as the opioid treatment provider workgroup facilitator and trainer. Dr. Harsell is the medical director at Spectra Health, a federally qualified health center in North Dakota, where she works with an integrated primary care team that offers medications for substance use disorders. She is passionate about patient-centered treatment for SUD, harm reduction, and interprofessional health care.

Jonathan Nunez
MD
Jonathan J. Nunez, MD received his medical degree from the University of Connecticut. He completed his residency at Yale New-Haven in Internal Medicine (Primary Care). Following this he was an epidemic intelligence service officer at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and completed Infectious Disease training at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. His journey has led him to a career focusing on HIV primary care, HIV prevention, LGBTQ+ care, and helping patients struggling with addiction. Dr. Nunez prefers to be called JJ, his preferred pronouns are he/him, and currently he practices at Penn State Health, Pennsylvania Psychiatric Institute Advancement in Recovery (AIR) program, and Alder Health.
