Host: Addiction Technology Transfer Center
Recorded: September 25, 2025
Enduring Training
Overview
This 75-minute case-based discussion explores how the normalization of alcohol in daily life can obscure problematic use and complicate treatment efforts. Using case-style examples, the session examines how cultural, social, and media influences contribute to the normalization of drinking. It offers practical strategies for providers, including motivational interviewing, protective behavioral tools, and temporary abstinence challenges. Presenters also explain the core motivators for alcohol use (coping, conformity, socialization, and enhancement) and highlight the risks posed by saturated environments. This discussion is designed to equip AUD treatment professionals with insights and tools to better support individuals in environments where alcohol use is routine and socially accepted.
