Overview

This webinar explores the impact of alcohol use during adolescence, a critical period of development, and highlights clinical strategies for addressing youth alcohol use disorder. Learners will examine current trends, identify associated risks and adverse outcomes, and gain practical knowledge of evidence-based screening, assessment, and psychosocial interventions. The session also addresses the limited role of pharmacotherapy in treating adolescent AUD, offering guidance on its cautious application. 

This course is not eligible for credit. 

The target audience for this introductory level activity includes: All types of healthcare professionals. 

The ACGME Competencies include: Patient Care and Procedural Skills, Medical Knowledge, and Systems-based Practice

Learning Objectives

Upon completion, learners will be able to:

  1. Describe brain changes that occur during adolescent development
  2. Indicate adverse outcomes associated with youth alcohol use
  3. Summarize trends in the rates of youth alcohol use
  4. Describe evidence-based clinical approaches for youth alcohol disorder

Dr. Kevin Gray

Medical University of South Carolina

As Chair of the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, Dr. Gray is dedicated to accelerating growth, collaboration, and impact across the tripartite missions of patient care, education, and research. Nationally, he serves in senior leadership roles with the American Academy of Addiction Psychiatry and the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry. Within MUSC, his leadership has spanned division, department, college, and university roles. Complementing his work as an active clinician, educator, and mentor, Dr. Gray’s highly collaborative and productive program of clinical research—continuously supported by the National Institutes of Health throughout his career—is focused on understanding and addressing youth substance use and mental health. This work has yielded national and international acclaim, reinforcing MUSC’s strong standing on the world stage.
