Overview

This training discusses common co-occurring medical conditions associated with alcohol use disorder (AUD), including liver disease, infectious diseases, respiratory illness, cardiovascular disease, and renal disease. Participants will learn to recognize the signs and symptoms of these co-occurring conditions and understand how medications for alcohol use disorder (MAUD) may need to be adjusted accordingly. The training explores updated, evidence-based guidance on key pharmacologic contraindications, dosing considerations, and medication adjustments. It also reviews medication metabolism mechanisms and the effects of MAUD on the immune system.

The target audience for this intermediate level activity includes: Prescribers

The ACGME Competencies include: Medical Knowledge, Patient Care and Procedural Skills, and Systems-based Practice

Learning Objectives

Upon completion, learners will be able to:

  1. Discuss the common, serious medical co-morbidities encountered in those with AUD.
  2. Understand how to modify use of medications for AUD (MAUD) in the face of serious medical co-morbidities.
  3. Describe effects of MAUD on medical co-morbidities.
