Overview

This five-video interactive series helps healthcare professionals build practical skills for discussing unhealthy alcohol use with patients and integrating alcohol-related care into routine clinical practice. Through realistic patient scenarios and interactive elements, the series demonstrates how to screen for alcohol use, discuss its impact on chronic disease outcomes, and engage patients in meaningful conversations about behavior change and treatment options when appropriate. Together, the videos provide a structured approach to recognizing alcohol-related risk, connecting alcohol use to chronic disease management, and utilizing motivational interviewing.

The target audience for this introductory level activity includes: All healthcare professionals, particularly those working in primary care and family medicine.

The ACGME Competencies include: Medical Knowledge, Patient Care and Procedural Skills, and Interpersonal and Communication Skills. 

Learning Objectives

Upon completion, learners will be able to:

  1. Incorporate and interpret routine screening for alcohol use into everyday clinical practice.
  2. Use brief motivational interviewing strategies effectively.
  3. Explain how alcohol use can affect chronic conditions and overall health outcomes.
  4. Discuss next-step care options, including behavior change strategies and medications for alcohol use disorder.

Currently, she also serves as an associate program director for Grayken Addiction Medicine fellowship. She spends her clinical time working as a hospitalist, attending on the inpatient addiction consultation service and working in the substance use disorder urgent care. Her interests include educating learners at all levels and expanding access to addiction treatment.
