Overview

Managing AUD in patients with co-occurring psychiatric conditions, such as depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, and PTSD, is common and clinically complex. This session uses a patient case to bridge theory and practice, equipping addiction medicine clinicians with practical strategies for effective care. Participants will gain tools to navigate screening and diagnostic challenges, develop treatment plans that combine pharmacologic and behavioral approaches, and overcome common clinical barriers to improve outcomes for individuals with co-occurring AUD and psychiatric disorders. This training is a recording of a live session hosted at ASAM's 57th annual conference. 

The target audience for this moderate level activity includes: All types of healthcare professionals. 

The ACGME Competencies include: Medical Knowledge, Patient Care and Procedural Skills, and Systems-based Practice

Learning Objectives

Upon completion, learners will be able to:

1. Apply validated screening and diagnostic tools to identify co-occurring psychiatric conditions in patients presenting with AUD.
2. Develop integrated and interdisciplinary treatment plans that address both AUD and co-occurring psychiatric conditions using evidence-based pharmacologic and behavioral interventions.
3. Assess common barriers to care for patients with co-occurring disorders and implement strategies to improve treatment engagement and outcomes.
