Overview

Alcohol use disorder (AUD) and withdrawal are common - and often undertreated - in correctional settings. This session focuses on how to identify and manage both effectively using evidence-based approaches. Through case-based discussion, explore screening, diagnosis, medication, and counseling strategies, along with interdisciplinary care planning and reentry continuity. The session also addresses system-level considerations, making it relevant for health staff, administrators, and custody professionals working to strengthen care delivery.

The target audience for this introductory level activity includes: All types of healthcare professionals working in jails and prisons. 

The ACGME Competencies include: Patient Care and Procedural Skills, and Systems-based Practice

Learning Objectives

Upon completion, learners will be able to:

1. Discuss evidence-based screening and assessment tools to identify alcohol use disorder and withdrawal
2. Develop integrated treatment strategies to safely manage complex AUD in incarcerated populations
3. Describe health system and measurement strategies to optimize AUD care
