Host: American Academy of Addiction Psychiatry
Recorded: September 10, 2026
Enduring Training

Overview

This training explores the neurobiological foundations of substance use disorders and how this understanding can inform the use of neuromodulation therapies in treatment. Participants will learn about the evolution of neuromodulation techniques, including transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) and focused ultrasound, and their expanding role across a range of psychiatric and substance use disorders. The session will also highlight emerging trends in alcohol use disorder (AUD) treatment, including ongoing research and opportunities to integrate neuromodulation with behavioral and pharmacologic interventions to improve patient outcomes.

The target audience for this intermediate level activity includes: All types of healthcare professionals.

The ACGME Competencies include: Medical Knowledge, Patient Care and Procedural Skills, and Systems-based Practice

Learning Objectives

Upon completion, learners will be able to:

  1. Explain how the neurobiological underpinnings of substance use disorders can guide the application of neuromodulation therapies.
  2. Explain how neuromodulation techniques have evolved as a treatment modality, with a focus on transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) and Focused Ultrasound, and their growing utility across different types of disorders.
  3. Discuss emerging trends in AUD treatment, including ongoing research studies and the potential to integrate neuromodulation with other therapeutic approaches to enhance treatment efficacy.
