Neurological Conditions and MAUD
Host: American Academy of Addiction Psychiatry
Recorded: September 28, 2026
Enduring Training
Overview
This training explores the major neurologic complications associated with alcohol use disorder (AUD) and equips clinicians with practical strategies for recognizing, diagnosing, and managing these conditions. Participants will learn how chronic alcohol use affects the nervous system through direct neurotoxicity, nutritional deficiencies, and hepatic dysfunction, leading to complications such as Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome, alcohol withdrawal seizures, delirium tremens, hepatic encephalopathy, peripheral neuropathy, and cerebellar degeneration. The session also reviews various treatment approaches, including the appropriate use of medications for alcohol use disorder (MAUD), and highlights important clinical considerations when neurologic and hepatic comorbidities are present.
The target audience for this intermediate level activity includes: All types of healthcare professionals.
The ACGME Competencies include: Medical Knowledge, Patient Care and Procedural Skills, and Systems-based Practice
Learning Objectives
Upon completion, learners will be able to:
- Describe the epidemiology of AUD and its major neurologic complications.
- Recognize and manage Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome, alcohol withdrawal seizures, and delirium tremens.
- Diagnose and treat hepatic encephalopathy and identify reversible precipitants.
- Identify the chronic neurological sequelae of AUD - peripheral neuropathy and cerebellar degeneration.
- Apply MAUD appropriately, including key limitations and cautions when these neurologic conditions are present.
