Overview

This training examines the clinical implications of alcohol use disorder (AUD) among patients receiving care in opioid treatment programs (OTPs) and office-based opioid use disorder treatment (OBOT) settings. Participants learn about the epidemiology of AUD in individuals with opioid use disorder (OUD) and the impact of this co-occurrence on patient outcomes. The session reviews best practices for screening, diagnosis, and biochemical testing for AUD in patients receiving medications for opioid use disorder (MOUD). Finally, the webinar will provide practical, evidence-based strategies for integrating medications for alcohol use disorder (MAUD) into OTP and OBOT settings to support comprehensive, patient-centered care.

The target audience for this introductory level activity includes: All types of healthcare professionals. 

The ACGME Competencies include: Patient Care and Procedural Skills, and Systems-based Practice

Learning Objectives

Upon completion, learners will be able to:

  1. Describe the epidemiology of alcohol use disorder (AUD) in individuals with opioid use disorder (OUD) and the clinical implications of co-occurrence
  2. Apply diagnostic and biochemical testing principles for AUD in patients receiving medications for opioid use disorder (MOUD)
  3. Implement evidence-based strategies for integrating medications for alcohol 
    use disorder (MAUD) into opioid treatment programs (OTPs) and office based OUD treatment settings (OBOTs)

David Marcovitz, MD

Associate Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences

Vanderbilt University

David Marcovitz, MD, is the current medical director of the Vanderbilt University Hospital Addiction Consult Service and Bridge Clinic. After graduating from Vanderbilt University School of Medicine, he completed general psychiatry residency at the MGH-McLean program at Harvard Medical School and an addiction psychiatry fellowship at Partners Healthcare / Harvard Medical School in Boston. His primary clinical and research interests include providing high quality addiction care, developing innovative models of collaborative care with other medical specialties, and medical education. He has worked in both academic and private, as well as inpatient and outpatient addiction treatment facilities. He became waivered to prescribe buprenorphine in 2014 and became a certified course instructor in 2018. He also serves on the Board of Directors of the American Academy of Addiction Psychiatry.
