Overview
This educational module aims to increase knowledge and practical application of medications for alcohol use disorder (MAUD) within residential substance use disorder (SUD) treatment settings. It addresses common misconceptions, clinical and organizational barriers, and evidence-based strategies for integrating MAUD into comprehensive, recovery-oriented residential care. The module emphasizes person-centered approaches, interdisciplinary collaboration, and continuity of care to support successful implementation. The goal is to equip learners with the knowledge and confidence to effectively incorporate MAUD into residential treatment programs, improving access, engagement, and treatment outcomes for individuals with AUD.
The target audience for this activity includes all clinical healthcare professionals.
This activity addresses the following ACGME Competencies: Patient Care and Procedural Skills; Medical Knowledge and Interpersonal and Communication Skills, and Systems-based practice.
Learning Objectives
Upon completion, learners will be able to:
Describe the role of MAUD in AUD treatment, including key terminology, FDA-approved options, and its place in ASAM Levels of Care and residential programs.
Apply screening and assessment strategies to identify AUD and polysubstance use and to guide MAUD selection based on patient characteristics.
Discuss how MAUD can be used in residential settings, accounting for indications, contraindications, and common clinical barriers.
Assess cost, access, and reimbursement factors that affect MAUD initiation and continuation.
Develop continuityofcare and discharge plans to ensure ongoing MAUD access and coordination with outpatient providers.
Integrate evidence-based strategies in MAUD discussions with patients and multidisciplinary teams, analyzing and addressing stigma, staff resistance, and adherence challenges.
