Overview
This 75-minute case-based discussion explains practical strategies for engaging patients who feel uncertain or ambivalent about alcohol use disorder treatment, using motivational interviewing (MI) techniques to support autonomy and assess readiness to change. By applying the MI OARS framework, learners gain a plethora of tools to guide focused, goal-oriented conversations that encourage positive behavior change and increase readiness to accept behavioral and/or medical treatment referrals.
The target audience for this introductory level activity includes: All types of healthcare professionals.
The ACGME Competencies include: Patient Care and Procedural Skills, and Systems-based Practice

- List at least two motivational interviewing (MI) micro-skills (e.g., OARS Framework) that can be used with patients who are ambivalent about making a health promoting change in their alcohol consumption.
